Too good to be true?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is still a relatively unknown amongst the general public. Hair transplants on the other hand, have become more common. People now feel comfortable about discussing the treatment and the fact that they have either had the treatment or are considering it.

Many people now get in touch with me saying they have stumbled across SMP perhaps when searching out hair transplant clinics. One of the impressions I get is that they don’t believe it!

Can you really give me the appearance of a shaved head or density on my thinning head?

Well, the answer is yes! But only when done by the correct technician. What I mean is that there are some people out there offering this treatment who are not only not properly trained or experienced, but are also using the incorrect equipment and pigment.

This can lead to a disaster!

So why is this amazing treatment not on everyone’s lips?

There are many answers to this question.

Number 1. As explained above. Some people who are winging it, by not being adequately trained and using the incorrect materials are doing damage to people’s confidence.

Im sure you’ve heard the old tale of if something good happens you tell 1 or maybe 2 people. But when something bad happens they tell 9 or 10. Therefore, what you get is cowboys doing a lot of damage not only to the industry but also to people’s heads!

Number 2. Stigma! Like I said earlier, people are still in the mentality of secrecy around SMP. Like a hair transplant maybe 10 or even 5 years ago people don’t want to talk about it. I’m sure that will change over time as it has with hair transplant.

Number 3. This is still a very niche market. I am one of only a handful of technicians worldwide offering both semi-permanent and permanent strains of this treatment. Yes that’s correct little old Lew Grady in Wigan pioneering the industry! Having said that, over the last 2 years I have seen a huge influx of new technicians on the market. Both good and bad.

So what should you do to find out if this is the right thing for you?

Do your research. Pick someone who can evidence their own work not photos that they have picked up from their trainer.

Can the Technician answer all of your questions? If the answer is no I’d probably not feel confident in their ability.

Do you get a good feeling from the Technician when you meet them? If the answer is no, again I would trust your gut feeling.
