PMURiconIt’s always difficult to decide on a career, as there are so many options to consider. Many men and increasingly women opt for a career in construction, a good choice in recent times. This is because there is currently a skills shortage affecting the industry, meaning many opportunities in a number of fields. The pandemic couldn’t have come at a worse time, with pressure to build new homes up and down the country.

According to the Chief  Executive of The Federation of Master Builders, the industry is experiencing a serious skills shortage. He said: ‘We’ve been experiencing a severe shortage of bricklayers and carpenters for quite some time, and skills shortages are now seeping into other key trades such as roofers and plumbers. Indeed, of the 15 key trades and occupations we monitor, 40% show skills shortages…’

There is an increasing scarcity of, and demand for, skilled tradespeople which is pushing up wages. The rising cost of materials isn’t helping the situation, and is causing problems for many small building companies.

Why is there a construction skills shortage?

The problem isn’t particularly a new one, as painters, plumbers and plasterers retire they aren’t being replaced fast enough by younger people. Over 20% of tradespeople in the UK are over the age of 50 and 15% in their 60s. There are a number of possible reasons for this, and misguided perception is one. Construction work encompasses a huge range of skills including not just physical labour, but other specialities. Careers in architecture, design, engineering and project management are all available within construction. These are skills which can be adapted to many other roles across a range of industries.

Issues that have arisen due to Covid and Brexit are also responsible for the shortages, such as lack of migrant workers. There is light at the end of the tunnel though, the world of construction is becoming more technical and digitalised. This is more likely to attract the interest of younger people, as this is the language they speak! Companies such as Ricon Recruitment specialise in those interested in working within the construction and engineering industries. Give them a call on 0161 736 8008.
